As you may be aware, May is PWS Awareness Month - and this year we have the added bonus of it being PWSA UK's 40th anniversary.
So, with that in mind, this year we would like as many of you as possible to Get Active in May for PWSA's 40th Birthday!
Last year we walked over 10 million steps around the UK and up to Scotland - virtually, of course, using the World Walking app. This May, we are going on a European Adventure. Starting in Lisbon we will make our way through Madrid and Monaco, from Paris to Prague, Budapest down to Bucharest, ending in Athens. These are just a few of the amazing countries we will ‘visit’ and by the end we will have done a grand total of 21,491,920 steps! How long do you think it will take?
You can use a range of ways to count your steps and convert them into miles, such as Fitbits, Strava, phone apps – or you can just count them yourself. Let us know either daily, weekly or at the end of the month and we can add your steps into the grand total.
Our starting point is Lisbon, and we will let everyone know how far we are in our relay every few days. And don’t forget, like last year, you don’t just have to walk, you can run, walk, skip, hop, jump, trampoline, bottom shuffle – any form of movement will count. If you do an on-the-spot activity such as yoga or in a chair, each 20 minutes will add up to 1 mile or 2,360 steps.
Once again, we will be using the World Walking app. It will track our steps and show us on a map how far we have walked - and we will provide regular updates on our combined progress via social media. You can use this app and join our group. Simply download it from the app store or sign up online.
If you are going to sign up, please let Karen or Lizzie know at KWilkinson@pwsa.co.uk or LPratt@pwsa.co.uk and they will invite you to our PWS group or alternatively you can use this link, then click on the message group button (once you had clicked on the URL) to send them a message asking to be invited to join the group and one of them will invite you.
Don’t forget to send us pictures of you doing your steps – ideally wearing something orange too!
And this brings us on to... Go Orange for PWS Day!
As always, this takes place on the last Friday of the month, which this year is May 27th. This is an opportunity to show support and raise awareness by making you and your family as orange as possible!
This year, for our 40th anniversary, we’d like to go even bigger and better than ever. Why not dress head to toe in orange, paint your face or do both? Why not get your friends and family involved too? There will be prizes for the most orange, funniest, and most creative - so let your imaginations run wild!
Please send photos of your orange efforts to admin@pwsa.co.uk, along with confirmation that you are happy for us to use the photos on our website, social media channels and in our magazine. We can’t wait to see the looks you all create!
If you'd like to hold a Go Orange Day in your school or workplace then you can download a poster here.
We also have limited edition orange merchandise available for Awareness Month via our online shop while stocks last.
Please keep an eye on our social media channels for more exciting Awareness Month updates!
